Personally, reading is one of my
favorite things to do. Many people are different in their thoughts about
reading, however I’ve always loved reading from a young age. I believe my
greatest strength when I read is what Sheridan Blau calls “A capacity for sustained
focused attention”(Blau). Whenever I read I just tune out everything that’s
going on around me and focus completely on the book. However, when reading a
book that I don’t enjoy and is assigned for me is much harder to focus. I feel
rushed and focus more on reading to the end of the chapter assigned.
When I do
read a book that is assigned for school, I find it important to annotate. The
most common way I annotate is by highlighting quotes I think are important such
as traits, themes, or connections. I rarely write side notes on where I
highlight and I think it would be helpful for me to do that to improve my
annotations.
Some books
we read for school, mainly Shakespeare, I don’t really understand or follow
well when reading. I think something I can take from this article is one of the
strategies of re-reading. Blau describes this skill as “faith in one’s self as
a reader that allows a reader to read a second time after feeling bewildered or
blank in a first reading”(Blau). I think by doing this, it will help me to get
a better understanding of the book better and it will give me a chance to
actually think about what I’m reading instead of just focusing on finishing the
part I’m supposed to read by a certain day.
