Reading Reflection- April 15, 2015

When school comes around the corner “book worms” can turn to people who don’t want to pick up a book and people who don’t like books sometimes turn into “bookworms”. As for me, when school comes around I become a more lazy reader because the readings that are required I normally don’t like and the books I do like are put into a pile. They wait till the summer, when I don’t have to read for school. I change form being a “book worm” into someone who dreads reading.

If I enjoy a schoolbook I normally make better annotations. By better annotations I mean more in depth instead of just underlining events/people. This year I was pretty good about annotating and taking notes. I made sure to write connections, foreshadowing, and questions I had in the side margins. Writing connections in the margins was new for me this year. Normally, I would just write a quick summary of the paragraph or what I was thinking at the time. It was hard sometimes to keep up with the reading if I wasn’t into the book. However, through these experiences I have created reading schedules for myself. I set a goal of a certain amount of pages or chapters to read each night so I’m not cramming it in the night before.

As I read through Jim Burke’s article, “Performative Literacy” I was able to distinguish what type of reader I am and how to improve on my reading skills. Throughout the article Burke listed numerous skills that a disciplined reader needs. I was able to match myself to some of these skills. For example, I have the skills to challenge the readings we do and to change my mind in order to appreciate alternative visions. After reading the article I can confidently label myself as a critical reader. I also have learned new strategies such as re-reading a text over and over to better comprehend it, patience when it comes to something more challenging, and sustaining focus towards the text. These strategies will make me a stronger reader and help me not procrastinate and get frustrated if I don’t understand the text the first time.
